SUMMARY:2024 Spotlight on Structured Literacy Series: “Aligning State Literacy Policies & Practices” Webinar
DESCRIPTION:IDA-GA and TRL-GA presents the “2024 Spotlight on Structured Literacy Series\,” a program of four webinars focusing on “Promoting Structured Literacy: Policy to Practice.” \nThe first webinar is “Aligning State Literacy Policies & Practices: Connecting the Georgia Council on Literacy (SB 211)\, the Georgia Early Literacy Act (HB 538)\, and Georgia’s Dyslexia Efforts (SB 48)” is on Wednesday\, January 17th\, at 7pm ET. \nNote: All registered webinar attendees (including those who watch the webinar recording at a later time) who complete a post-webinar knowledge check/survey will be eligible for a Certificate of Attendance. \nRegister here*: https://forms.gle/vTzhRZUWD2nTCdmz8 \n(*Registration closes January 16 at 11:59 p.m.) \nDescription: \nIn the past several years\, the Georgia General Assembly passed three significant literacy bills – the Georgia Council on Literacy (SB 211)\, the Georgia Early Literacy Act (HB 538)\, and Dyslexia Identification and Supports (SB 48). SB 211 created a 30-member Council on Literacy with its primary role to monitor and report on implementation of HB 538. HB 538 requires screening of K-3 students on their reading proficiency three times a year\, teacher training in the Science of Reading\, approval of high-quality instructional and screening tools\, and realignment of teacher certification requirements. SB 48 requires all K-3 students to be screened for dyslexia\, the development of a dyslexia informational handbook\, professional development opportunities for teachers\, and the creation of a dyslexia endorsement for teachers. This presentation will address the alignment of these three legislative measures and the potential impact on changing the trajectory of literacy in Georgia. \nLearn more about the webinar and presenters here: https://ga.dyslexiaida.org/event/2024jan17/.

SUMMARY:IDA-GA and TRL-GA Spotlight on Structured Literacy Webinar Series\, #1: Dyslexia’s Impact on Literacy and Well-Being with Guest Dr. Tim Odegard
DESCRIPTION:In this first of the four 2025 Spotlight on Structured Literacy webinars hosted by IDA Georgia and The Reading League Georgia\, Dr. Tim Odegard will discuss dyslexia’s impact on literacy and well-being. Beyond its impact on reading and writing\, dyslexia’s primary characteristics significantly affect mental health and overall well-being. These modern realities challenge us to consider how we define\, approach\, and address dyslexia. This webinar explores the implications of word-level difficulties characteristic of dyslexia on mental health. It also examines research that has aimed to address the mental health challenges prevalent among individuals with dyslexia. \nTim Odegard is a Professor of Psychology holding the Katherine DavisMurfree Chair of Excellence in Dyslexic Studies\, and he leads the Tennessee Center for the Study and Treatment of Dyslexia at Middle Tennessee State University. He contributes significantly to advancing the Science of Reading in key leadership roles. He currently serves As Editor-in-Chief of Annals of Dyslexia and consulting editor for the Journal of Learning Disabilities. He is a past editor of Perspective on Language and Literacy. He was a contributing author on the IDA’s Knowledge and Practice Standards for Teachers of Reading. He is a past Vice President of the Texas Dyslexia Licensure Advisory Committee and has served as a member of the International Dyslexia Association’s (IDA) Educational Training Initiative. Read more about Dr. Odegard here: https://ga.dyslexiaida.org/event/jan22-2025-odegard/ \nThe Spotlight on Structured Literacy series is now an annual offering by IDA-GA and TRL-GA. There is no cost to attend. Attendees can opt to receive a Certificate of Attendance documenting clock hours after completing a Knowledge Check/Survey. Each webinar is 1 hour\, from 7:00-8:00 pm ET(Presentation and Q&A). \nRegistration*: https://forms.gle/MtYtvD4dNyjTXQVw7\n*Register by January 21 at 11:59 pm to receive the link to attend the live webinar. \nInformation about the Spotlight on Structured Literacy Series: https://ga.dyslexiaida.org/2025-spotlight-on-structured-literacy-webinar-series/
